Hydrogen technologies

Fraunhofer IKTS has decades of experience in the development and construction of electrochemical reactors for the production and use of hydrogen, which makes industrial electrolysis one of our most important fields of activity. The simple storage and transportation of hydrogen in pipelines makes its use attractive for freight transport, traffic and industrial applications. Fraunhofer IKTS supports the monitoring of tanks and pipelines with solid expertise in materials science and measurement and testing technology.

In terms of hydrogen utilization, Fraunhofer IKTS makes a wide range of contributions, be it the conversion of hydrogen into chemical energy carriers or basic chemicals, reconversion into electricity in fuel cells or direct energetic utilization in thermal processes or the steel industry. Fraunhofer IKTS develops and demonstrates these technologies with extensive system expertise as well as prototype and test capacity.

Alkaline and AEM water electrolysis

At Fraunhofer IKTS, stack components are optimized with regard to their power density (electrode architecture, coatings, diaphragms) as well as ecological and design aspects (reduction of precious metal catalysts, increase of the active electrode surface). In addition, electrodes and stacks are developed with a special focus on digital process control (automated testing, stacking of large-area stacks).

Development and scale-up of power-to-X processes

Electrolysis is the starting point for the production of chemical energy carriers. Fraunhofer IKTS is developing SOEC stacks, based on these, process concepts in which electrolysis is combined with synthesis steps such as Fischer-Tropsch, methanol or ammoniac synthesis. By closely coupling the processes in terms of materials and heat integration, high levels of efficiency can be achieved. Validated process models are available for the design and implementation of specific demonstration plants.

Converting a steel mill to climate-neutral steel production

To decarbonize steel production, Fraunhofer IKTS, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, TS ELINO GmbH and Salzgitter AG are working on converting an existing steel mill to climate-neutral production methods. The aim is to produce steel by the direct reduction of iron ore with H₂, which would completely replace harmful coke as a reducing agent. The H₂ required for this method is produced using electrolysis processes with electricity generated from renewable energies. Overall, this could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 97 %.

Demonstration plant for CO₂-free electricity generation with ammonia in high-temperature fuel cells (SOFC).

Ammonia for efficient power generation with CO₂-free exhaust air

Ammonia is an ideal source material for the climate-friendly production of electricity and heating energy. Fraunhofer IKTS has developed a demonstrator based on a high-temperature fuel cell stack (SOFC) that can convert ammonia directly into electricity with a high degree of efficiency. Electricity and heat are generated in a single compact system - without CO₂ emissions or other harmful by-products. The waste heat can be used as heating energy, for example.

Monitoring system for pressure tanks of vehicles running on hydrogen.

Safe storage of hydrogen or gas in pressure tanks

Fraunhofer IKTS has developed a monitoring system that examines pressure tanks for structural changes. This is based on actively excited ultrasonic waves, which indicate structural changes through significant deviations in the measurement signals compared to the original defect-free state. During data evaluation, these structural changes or damage are detected, localized, classified and visually displayed. Damage can be detected both permanently and periodically during an inspection.
